UMEZZTUBE DESERVES SOME LOVE

After all the KagoTube posts, I wanted to revisit Kazuo Umezu's own YouTube channel. Umezz (with Demerin's help, naturally) has continued to post goofy and interesting clips.

Here is his most recent clip, featuring a bevy of paper masks, GWASHI hands and a strange giant-sized naked Umezu cut-out! (The cut-out feature Umezu's face on a big reproduction of a naked figurine. YES). Enjoy:

UMEZU CREATES ART FOR 101TOKYO FAIR

Here's another quick, stolen-from-Umezz.com article while I finalize some captions for the 108 Taco Che post pictures. According to a recent post, Kazuo Umezu created a piece and participated in the 101TOKYO Contemporary Art Fair 2009. The fair is an expo of pop and fine art, held annually in Tokyo and going on now from April 2 - 5.

For a "CHARART" (character + art?) comics exhibit, Umezz created a new art print with some Sony Digital tie-in. The piece is signed by Umezz and features a creepy, noir-ish image from a 1969 Orochi comic of his.

Rocking the Gwashi! in front of his piece.

I don't see Demerin, who are these other fools?

Signing the print... inside the Makoto-chan house!

Sony logo aside, this is pretty wicked.

If you happen to be in Tokyo, it's 10 bucks to check out the event, though their website didn't make it seem quite up our alley (beyond the Umezu-connection). Nate won't be attending because dude will be in California this week! We are hanging out this weekend, and I hear he's bringing signed Kago goodies for me (and stuff to give away via Same Hat). Will keep you guys posted!

THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!

I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

Linked from Umezz.com, I just read an article detailing the ins & outs of Kazuo Umezu's famous Makoto-chan house in Kichijoji. In summary, it is a dandy horror nerd Valhalla.

The article is written by mangaka and author Kentaro Takekuma, who has written and lectured on manga and co-wrote Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga! with another favorite of mine, Koji Aihara. Not surprising that Takekuma and Umezu are buddies, huh?

Takekuma explains in his post that these pics were taken in February at a housewarming party hosted by Kazuo Umezu. He notes that Umezz decorated the entire house (surprise!) and not pictured here are an amazing library curated by Demerin, including every published work by Umezz. Also worth noting, apparently the woman who filed the original lawsuit against the home lives... next door to the Makoto-chan house!

Okay, so here are the pics from inside the house. PREPARE TO BE AMAZED:

Check out the original post here. I am still waiting for someone to FIND THIS HOUSE and put it on the Same Hat Guide To Everything!

It's been Kazuo Umezu overload on Same Hat this week, but you guys don't mind... right? The latest toy news from Umezz.com is an Umezz figure designed by Demerin based on her depiction of him in her gag manga, Umezology. Yes, you read all that right!

JUST BECAUSE...

As an addendum to the Umezz Fest 08 post, here is a clip of Demerin playing the FEVER theme from Dr. Mario:

UMEZZ FEST '08

We all missed it, but a few months back in Kochijoji, Kazuo Umezu hosted a big UMEZZ FESTIVAL '08 event. I was secretly scheming a way to get over to Japan in time to attend (or get Nate, Same Hat's Man in Japan to sneak in) but no luck this time. Luckily, Umezu and Demerin have posted pics of the entire happening.

The event was held on 9/14 at Star Pine's Cafe, and included dancing, comedy skits, a Q&A, exclusive Umezu goods, and prizes like DVDs and figurines for folks in the audience.
GODDAMMIT, I WILL BE THERE FOR UMEZZ FEST 09!

Party people in the place to be.

Umezz webmaster & mangaka, Demerin.

The sultan of horror manga.

Rocking the cape with UMEZZ PERFECTION edition panels on the walls.

The greatest jacket of all time?

Goddess of Love and Umezu.com themed Yokosuka base silk jacket. AMAZING!

Scooby Doo-eseque comedy sketch, it appears.

Very disturbing stuff, this.

Finale group shot...

So, who else wants to go to the next one in 2009??

UMEZZ.COM CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE

This has been floating around online for about two months, for those keeping track on Umezz.com. Webmaster Demerin and company have compiled a number of clips for the launch of Kazuo Umezu's personal YouTube channel!

There are about ~30 videos so far, and the majority are informal interviews with the man himself. Naturally, these are all in Japanese but full of gems and great moments. Here are few highlights from the channel to date:

# Umezu signing and embellishing a board for a lucky fan:

# SO RIDICULOUS! Uncle Kaz playing a microKORG synthesizer while wearing cat ears and meowing:

# Demerin and Kaz chatting about her first manga collection, Umezology:

# Spritely and behatted Umezz on stage at the 2005 Fukuoka Hero Festa:

UMEZU PHOTO GALLERY UPDATES!

In the past few months, UMEZZ.com has updated Kazuo Umezu's Picasa Photo Album with three new galleries of awesomeness. Have I mentioned that I love this man?

The galleries each span a recent appearance/event in Tokyo:
1) UMEZU SUPER FESTIVAL 46
2) OME☆KOBOSHI 4
3) 17TH ANNUAL TOKYO SPORTS FILM AWARDS

(Tokyo Sports is a famous daily newspaper)

Please keep in mind, you are looking at a 71 year old dude. Amazing.

From the Super Carnival, tables of Makoto-chan goods.

The entire Umezu crew gets in on the fan dance. (That's webmaster/mangaka Demerin in the pink suit + silver boots)

Umezz signing autograph boards for fans. I missed this event by only a month.. DAMN!

A photo you didn't expect, right? Kazuo Umezu shootin' the shit onstage with Beat Takeshi, at the Tokyo Sports Film Awards.

Umezu looking dapper at the post-ceremony press conference.

Our patron saint hamming it up with his award and GWASHI hand in effect.
